Digital for a Decade

For someone so enamored of photography, it may seem strange that I only received my first digital camera in 2004, relatively late in the digital world. However, checking today’s date, it looks like I’ve been digital for almost a decade, which makes my first shots practically vintage. A number of months (years?) ago I made a half-hearted attempt at doing a ‘Classic Shots’ series of posts on this site. We managed a few, but it sort of petered out. Marking a tenth anniversary is something different, though, and may signify a reinvigorated examination of what happened those many years ago. Here’s the first reboot of that series, a few photographs taken in 2004.

It’s a strange juxtaposition to have a few fall shots for a rebirth of a series, but stranger things have happened here. Besides, I’ve always considered fall as a chance to begin again. The cool nights, the snap of a frost, and the forests in flame all serve to jump-start inspiration.

Classic Us

I’m often given to hyperbole on this site. It keeps things interesting, and it’s more fun rising to the histrionic. In this case, I’m making the bold, and perhaps overused, proclamation that this is one of my favorite photos of all-time. Since it takes pride of place on our photo wall, there is something to back this up. It’s a photo of JoAnn and myself, taken by our friend Kira. And it comes with a short, silly story.

At the time (late 90’s) we were all working at John Hancock – a temporary job that consisted of microfiche and insurance numbers and a class-action lawsuit against the company – blah, blah, blah. To be honest, I wasn’t altogether sure what exactly we did, but I did it well enough, and was actually made a team leader (?!). It was my first office job, and it was filled with the variety of characters that comes in an office setting. Of course, in a few short weeks you whittle down those who will become friends, and JoAnn soon became one of my closest. We were just another ‘Will & Grace’, involved in the same riotous hi-jinks, and reveling in our foolishness as much as we laughed at ourselves.

On this particular day in spring, we sat on the steps of Trinity Church after lunch. It was sunny, and warm enough that we didn’t need jackets. I’d always scope out potential guys for JoAnn, and if a cute one came along I’d urge her to say hello. She never did. Sitting a few steps down from us was a guy smoking a cigarette and enjoying his lunch hour. I nudged JoAnn in his direction – she brushed me off. I laughed a little and told her to bum a smoke off of him to start the conversation. She ignored me. “Just ask for a light!” I demanded. Hey, it was lunch. I was working at an insurance company. I was bored. And I could be relentless. Exasperated, she turned to the guy and asked for a light. He brought out a lighter and was about to flick it.

“Oh, do you have a cigarette too?” she asked. He looked slightly confused and annoyed, but gave her one. I started cracking up then and there. I couldn’t stop. It was one of those laughs that leaves your belly aching and your eyes wet with tears. We had asked this guy for a light without having a cigarette (we didn’t really smoke that much), then we displayed the idiocy to ask for a cigarette after that. JoAnn kept a straight face, took the cigarette, and handed it to me. “Here, you wanted this?” she said. I roared. After the guy left (which he did pretty much immediately), Kira took this picture as we recounted what just happened.

It’s one of the rare photos of me where I am genuinely laughing and not paying any attention to the camera. It still cracks me up, and whenever I need a laugh I think of that day, those moments, and these friends.

Scariest Easter Bunny Ever

Is this not the most terrifying Easter Bunny you’ve ever seen? What parent in their right mind forces their child onto the lap of a creature like this? No wonder I wet the bed for so many years. This is the Easter picture that everyone gets such a kick out of every year (especially Suzie) mostly because I have such a frightened expression on my face, and was probably pissing my pants at the very moment it was taken – I don’t care if the bunny was wearing purple tulle. Whenever I see a kid crying on the lap of Santa or the Easter Bunny, my heart goes out to them. As for that outfit, I clearly wasn’t dressing myself yet…

Classic Shot Series ~ Wonka, Willy

Another series of shots from ‘The Divine Diva Tour: A Fairy’s Tale’ in honor of our tenth anniversary. I’m still torn about putting that particular Project up – it’s one of those that people either loved or hated, and I’m tired, which means that the haters would annoy me more than usual. For now, just a quick glimpse, Willy Wonka style, even though I’ve never seen the movie – original or Burton redux.

Classic Shot Series ~ Sepia Rope

Continuing our month-year-long celebration of a decade of www.ALANILAGAN.com, this is one of the “Classic Shot Series“, taken some eight or nine years ago. Someone on FaceBook (whose profile pic was some cat or flower) challenged me to what made these photos “classic”. I thought of a number of responses, but in the end it came down to this: because I said so. And screw anyone who’s going to critique my pictures when they don’t even display one of their own for their profile.

This set was also shot for ‘The Divine Diva Tour: A Fairy’s Tale’, intended for the build-up to the finale, which takes a darker turn. The notion of a picnic basket lends a fairy-tale aspect to the scene, but the rope inside gives it a decidedly different feel. Both menacing and threatening, there is also a comedic element that is exemplified by the sunglasses and the shoes – dangerously high platforms that, in person, removed any real danger to the persona on hand.

Tie me up, tie me down…

Classic Shot Series ~ Global Wheat Harvest

This is one of the new features of the site – a brief collection of classic shots, culled from within the last ten years of www.ALANILAGAN.com. I’m starting with some of the older ones, as those are the ones that have already been forgotten, (and in which I look rather younger…) This particular batch is from a session for ‘The Divine Diva Tour: A Fairy’s Tale’ back in 2005. I think only one of them was actually used. As for that Project, I thought long and hard about putting it online, but determined that the world is not quite ready for me in drag – not like that. Perhaps one day…
