She just sang Happy Birthday to Beyoncé at one of the Renaissance Tour stops, which felt somewhat like the anointing of the next queen-in-waiting for the throne of pop culture Queen Bee – a title which Diana Ross has arguably held in her long and storied career. Impossible to encapsulate in a single post, Ms. Ross easily adds Dazzler of the Day to her many titles and accomplishments. Her influence reigns in all the various configurations and career trajectories of singer-actor-producer-writer-multi-hyphenates, and she paved the way for entities such as Whitney Houston, Madonna, Janet Jackson and of course Beyoncé. Michael Jackson himself publicly admired and credited Ross with inspiring him from a young age, so her aspirational career appealed to more than female entertainers. Today, she is still touring, still performing, and still shining as one of the most enduring and beloved stars this world has ever been fortunate to have in its ranks.

Dazzler of the Day: Jim Verraros
He was part of that magical first season of ‘American Idol’, where every contestant was memorable in their own right, each perfectly capable of being the main character in the story. Jim Verraros won the hearts of the world when he competed and viewers got to know his adorable parents, and since then he’s crafted a solid life for himself, one that has included music and film roles along the way. He is returning to the musical scene with new work this month – the eagerly-anticipated new single ‘Take My Bow’ is out September 15, 2023 and he earns this Dazzler of the Day for doing it with the style, panache and talent that earned him a place on the ‘Idol’ platform.

Dazzler of the Day: Graham McTavish
It wouldn’t be right to name Sam Heughan as Dazzler of the Day without bestowing equal glory upon his ‘Outlander’ and ‘Men in Kilts’ co-star and pal Graham McTavish, and so it is that McTavish gets his official crowning as Dazzler today. In addition to his renowned work on ‘Outlander’, McTavish is perhaps best recognized for his work on ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, where his unmistakable voice cut through all the make-up and fantasy footage. For me, it’s the very real, and often hilarious, friendship depicted in ‘Men in Kilts’ that makes him such a fascinating study.

Dazzler of the Day: Sam Heughan
Known perhaps best for his work on ‘Outlander’, Sam Heughan came into my life thanks to his real-life travel series ‘Men In Kilts: A Road Trip with Sam and Graham’ which features him and his co-star and friend Graham McTavish. The genuine friendship and camaraderie between them, and the palpable chemistry and bonhomie makes for constantly entertaining moments, even when they’re just driving along in their van. They wrote a best-selling book together as well, entitled ‘Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other.’ For those reasons, Heughan is crowned as Dazzler of the Day. Check out this season of ‘Men In Kilts’ as they explore New Zealand.
{On a completely unrelated note, I’m wearing a kilt for all my holiday dinners this year.}

Dazzler of the Day: Nick Vannello
A Renaissance man in the truest sense, Nick Vannello has taken yet another surprising turn in his latest endeavor – a set of coloring books for anyone who loves to color (and coloring is a recent craze as calming and enjoyable as meditation for some). Vannello has been here before, during his reign as a kilt maestro, and now offers a phantasmagoria of coloring books that focus on various fabulous phobias in witty and whimsical form, as well as Day of the Dead creatures – perfect gift ideas for the upcoming spooky fall season. (Check out the Facebook page for ColorBooks.Art here.) Vannello also helms GoNaked Travels, which is as thrillingly scintillating as it sounds. He earns his first crowning as Dazzler of the Day for all the inspiration he supplies, and the fascinating trajectory of his own ongoing journey of self-exploration.

Dazzler of the Day: Donna Murphy
With the new trailer for the next season of ‘The Gilded Age’ that was just released, I am once again obsessed with this show from the creator of ‘Downton Abbey’. To that end, this Dazzler of the Day goes to Donna Murphy, whose glorious portrayal of Mary Astor is one of the highlights of the series. From a subdued ferocity that belies her formidable social status, to the icy smiles she bestows upon her enemies, Murphy exhibits a lofty untouchable air that is eons from the legendary performance she gave as Fosca in Stephen Sondheim’s underappreciated ‘Passion’. I distinctly recall her work in that seminal production, and it haunts me to this day. Her role on ‘The Gilded Age’ is much more fun, even as she layers it with nuance and studied diction. Seeing her go head-to-head with Carrie Coon’s Bertha is sure to be the dramatic match-up of the fall season.

Dazzler of the Day: Trevor Wayne
Artist Trevor Wayne’s main goal in his work is to make people smile, and the colorful and witty way he conveys ideas is certainly smile-inducing. For that ability to charm viewers of his artwork, Wayne earns this Dazzler of the Day crowning. Check out his website and online shop here for more evidence of his brilliance, and the excerpted bio below:
Trevor Wayne mines familiar references for his paintings, drawing on totems of consumerism and mainstream entertainment that are well-known to American audiences. Trevor’s artist statement is to simply “make people smile”, very often by taking dark imagery and flipping it.
Trevor was influenced into a world of art by Saturday Morning Cartoons, and mass production of art he carried with him to school on backpacks, binders, and clothing. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago.?
Trevor Wayne was born in Chicago, lived on a blueberry farm in Michigan, lived in Hammond, IN (the town the classic “A Christmas Story” is based on), NYC, Los Angeles, and now resides in Palm Springs, CA.

Dazzler of the Day: Nicholas Galitzine
Along with his co-star Taylor Zakhar Perez in ‘Red, White and Blue’, Nicholas Galitzine forms an integral part of the combustible chemistry and acting prowess that makes a typical rom-com (with a gay spin) into something so much more. As Prince Henry, Galitzine’s stoically-tortured and ultimately transformative role grounds the film with the necessary pathos to make us invest in these characters and care about how they will navigate their lives. His charisma was in evidence in previous occasionally-princely roles in ‘Cinderella’, ‘Bottoms’ and ‘Purple Hearts’. A star clearly on the rise, he will next show up in ‘The Idea of You’. This marks his first and likely not last appearance as Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Taylor Zakhar Perez
The first rom-com I’ve watched in the last twenty years or so was ‘Bros’ because certain people said it was worth the watch, and was reportedly the groundbreaking gay rom-com we’d all been waiting for. First of all, I’ve never been waiting for a romantic-comedy – not one of that genre of film has made it onto my top fifty movies. Second, I thought ‘Bros’ kind of sucked. My focus shifted from the lap-top to anything else in the room repeatedly, and I don’t even remember the ending. Did the boy get the boy? Was there a happily ever-after? Did it even matter?
When ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ was announced as a film, I raised a weary eye-brow and waited for the reception. I’d read the book last summer and enjoyed it on its escapist level, but I didn’t have faith in the rom-com-on-film formula. Perhaps it was the need for something light and fluffy, or the earnest, idealistic tone the film genuinely adopts, or the engaging portrayals of its two handsome leads – and probably because of all of those items I enjoyed it immensely. In fact, it’s led to the start of a dazzling pairing of Dazzlers of the Day, beginning with Taylor Zakhar Perez, who plays the American President’s son. Perez has been wowing audiences for years, in such work as ‘The Kissing Booth’ trilogy and ‘Minx’. Primed for a turn as the next-big-thing, he earns his first Dazzler of the Day crowning here.

Dazzler of the Day: Margo Martindale
She’s been in more movies than you realize, and you know her from her miraculous way of disappearing into a character and erasing all sense of herself. Margo Martindale is one of those talented actresses who have built a career on unassuming but effective character parts, becoming part of the tapestry of every movie she inhabits, lending her own talented threads to the work, and then slipping out of it without ego or showiness, even when she’s chewing the scenery and going head-to-head with Meryl Streep. Such was the case in her amazing work in ‘August: Osage County’ which we just revisited the other day. It’s a typical Martindale tour-de-force: quietly powerful, poignantly surprising, and absolutely redolent of the humanity she so exquisitely embodies. That sort of work easily earns her this crowning as Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Deven Robertson
Ignoring social media has largely been a lovely act of self-preservation and self-improvement, but even with my increased absence on Instagram, Threads, Twitter and FaceBook, some things manage to rise through it all, such as the wardrobe malfunction in a recent soccer game, thus resulting in the first crowning of Dazzler of the Day in a while, bestowed upon Deven Robertson. Putting the Brisbane Lions on the world stage of thirst, Roberston had his shirt ripped from his body, and no one bothered to complain.

Dazzler of the Day: Matt Baume
Writers make the best dazzlers, because they do most of my work for me. Case in point is Matt Baume, who earns his first Dazzler of the Day thanks to a body of work that includes ‘Defining Marriage’ and his latest ‘Hi Honey, I’m Homo!’ But in the words of LeVar Burton, you don’t have to take my word for it. Here’s an excerpt from his enchanting website:
Matt Baume is a writer, podcaster, and video-maker based in Seattle whose work focuses on pop culture and queer history.
His latest book, Hi Honey, I’m Homo!, traces the evolution of LGBTQ+ characters on American sitcoms. His previous book, Defining Marriage, chronicles the personal stories of people who fought for marriage equality over the last forty years.
In his popular YouTube series, Matt shares behind-the-scenes stories about the movies and TV shows that changed the world, and the fascinating people involved. He’s also the creator of the podcast The Sewers of Paris, which explores the entertainment that has shaped the lives of queer people.
A GLAAD award nominee for journalism, Matt’s work has been recognized by the New York Times as “thoughtful and thorough … informative and funny.”
After Matt appeared as a pop culture critic in the Showgirls documentary You Don’t Nomi, Forbes called his observations on the film “potentially intriguing,” which he chooses to interpret as a complement.
Matt has guested on such shows as The Savage Lovecast, Out Chicago, Tomefoolery, No Safeword, and Feast of Fun; he’s delivered presentations on LGBTQ+ culture for employee groups at companies that include Expedia, Sony, Roblox, EA, and more. He’s appeared on panels at South by Southwest, Emerald City Comicon, PAX West, GaymerX, HavenCon, and the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association.
You can find Matt’s past reporting in outlets that include Rolling Stone, Vice Magazine, Slate, The Advocate, The Stranger, and NPR.

Dazzler of the Day: Cody Fern
A nude bedroom selfie is usually all it takes to qualify as a Dazzler of the Day, but Cody Fern also has the acting chops and talent to more than justify it (though the thirst-trap is more than appreciated). One of the workhorses in Ryan Murphy’s consistently impressive stable of talent, Fern has appeared in many of his series, including several ‘American Horror Story‘ seasons and ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’. I once passed him on the street in Manhattan and I swear he did a double-take at my coat. At least that’s what I’m choosing to believe. As he has always been one of my fashion idols, that would be amazing.

Dazzler of the Day: Bridget Moynahan
Remembered indelibly in these parts as the put-upon Natasha in ‘Sex and the City’ and an all-too-brief appearance in ‘And Just Like That’, Bridget Moynahan as Dazzler of the Day is a request of my friend Elizabeth, who often has divine taste in all things arts and entertainment. Moynahan got her start modeling extensively, and successfully segued into acting. She has appeared in films like ‘Coyote Ugly’, ‘The Sum of All Fears’, ‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick; Chapter 2’, in addition to starring in the television series ‘Blue Bloods’.

Dazzler of the Day: Olivia Rodrigo
The dividing line between fans and non-fans of Olivia Rodrigo seems to meander along the wavering edge between older and younger people on my social media timelines. Those in the fandom have posted the following interesting figures:
- She is the first person born after the year 2000 to have multiple songs debut at #1 (three in total now that “Vampire” has debuted at #1)
-
She is the only person in history to have the lead singles from each of their first 2 albums debut at number one.
-
She was the first female in history to have her first two singles from her debut album enter the chart at number one.
-
She is the youngest person to debut 3 singles at number one – ever.
For those reasons alone, she has easily earned this Dazzler of the Day.
