It is said that tonight marks the night when the veil between the material world and the spiritual world is at its thinnest – and communing with those on the other side is the most possible. I don’t know how much of that I believe, but I tend to hedge my bets and play it safely in-between both worlds whenever I can, so I’ll be straddling and floating per usual tonight.
These pictures were taken during this cowboy shoot, on a magical stretch of hidden road, quite off the beaten path, and then another path removed from that, so it was basically just me and a few cows racing the sun and daring it to set before I could find my way back home. I lost that dare; dusk comes quickest at this time of the year – even more-so than in the winter, when we are more accustomed to early nightfalls.

You can just see the beginning of the shadows in these photos, and if I hadn’t written that you might not have noticed at all. That’s the insidious and subtle way it starts. It pulls you in with a softer, more golden light, tempting with beauty, enticing with pleasure. You lean against the wooden stake of a barbed wire fence, itself barely standing, and you barely upright against it, like some slack scarecrow, the kind that will haunt us forever after.
Halloween ushers in the darker half of the seasonal year. Even through the end of October, bits and remnants of summer could linger in the air, especially when the sun shone and the warmth of the earth reverberated into the night. That gets switched off tonight, as if by magic, and the forced turning back of clocks that were only made to go forward gives us darkness earlier, and later. Don’t bother trying to make sense of that.
