When Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Behind the Candelabra’ went to HBO instead of the big-screen, I wondered if Liberace’s endless supply of Austrian crystals had at long last run out. I got around to watching it last night, and not even Matt Damon in a Speedo could save it, but it’s enough to name him the Hunk of the Day. (Though it was fun seeing at least one ostrich-feather floor-length cape…) The movie itself was, in spite of all the forced sparkle, rather lackluster. If it was supposed to be a love story, there was little love. If it was a study of who’s-using-whom, it lacked intrigue and devastation. (PS – Michael Douglas made a better gay man guest starring on ‘Will & Grace’ than he did as Liberace; see that episode instead and save yourself the trouble.) As for Mr. Damon, he looks only marginally better in this suit than in the one he wore so intentionally-atrociously in ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’.
