Absent Loved One

Mom and Gram

When I was a little boy, the one consistent harbinger of the big holidays was the arrival of my Grandmother from Hoosick Falls. My brother and I would rush in after our last day at school before vacation and find her, usually in the kitchen cooking or washing dishes, and we’d hug her and the holiday would officially begin. She was an essential part of our Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s celebration – sometimes the best part.

This Thanksgiving is the first one where she will not be with us, and I already feel her absence. Though she’s been gone since July, I knew I would not really feel it until times like this. Part of me still believes she is just an hour away, still somewhere in Hoosick Falls, waiting for Mom to pick her up.

We were lucky to have her with us all these years, and for that I am thankful.
